Chile earthquake spares fruit. Fishing boats have been washed up onto the streets of Coquimbo
An earthquake that struck off the coast of Chile Sept. 16 is taking little effect on the country’s fresh fruit industry.
As of Sept. 17, the Chilean industry was still assessing conditions in northern and central growing regions, but initial reports indicated “almost no damage,” according to a news release from the Santiago-based Chilean Fresh Fruit Exporters Association (ASOEX).
As of Sept. 17, ASOEX had received no reports of damage to packing sheds, cold storage facilities or transportation links.
“There does not seem to be any impact on the fruit industry, and the coming cherry and blueberry seasons should begin without any major interruption,” Ronald Bown, ASOEX’s chairman.
